Paving on Heath's Black Soil

Asphalt paving in Heath starts with the ground the town was named for. The community was first called Black Hill for its dark soil, and it had the first post office in what is now Rockwall County, opened in 1849. That soil is Blackland Prairie clay: dark, alkaline and prone to swelling when wet and cracking deeply when dry. A driveway built on it without a solid base will move with it.

A town that came back

Heath fell to about 50 residents by 1950, then grew again with suburban expansion and the building of Lake Ray Hubbard in 1969 and 1970. The 2010 census counted 6,921 people and the 2020 census 9,769, with an estimate of 11,238 for 2023.

Long and circular driveways

Heath's larger lots mean longer driveways, circle drives and motor courts. Curves and large areas add cost (HomeGuide notes that curves, slopes and unusual shapes add about 15 to 30 percent), but they also give room to slope the pavement properly. We set the grades so water leaves every part of a circle drive, not just the ends.

Building for clay

On long drives, the edges are the weak point. Clay along the sides dries and shrinks in summer and swells in wet weather, and an unsupported edge cracks and breaks off. We extend the compacted base past the asphalt edge and taper it, and we keep downspouts and irrigation from soaking the clay beside the drive.

Gravel conversions

Some older properties still have gravel drives. If the gravel is thick and firm, it can become part of the new base; if it has sunk into the clay, we add crushed stone before paving.

Permits

Heath has its own permit office. We confirm the city's requirements before scheduling.

What the bid covers

We measure every section of the drive, check grades, dig test spots on gravel and probe soft areas. The bid lists the main drive, any circle or motor court, edges and drainage work separately, so you can see what each part costs.

Heath Questions

Do circle drives cost more?

Usually. HomeGuide says curves and unusual shapes add about 15 to 30 percent. We price your layout after measuring.

Why do my driveway edges break off?

Clay beside the drive shrinks and swells, leaving the edge unsupported. A wider compacted base and a tapered edge help.

Can you pave over my old gravel drive?

If it is thick and firm, yes, with fresh crushed stone added where needed.

How long before I can drive on new asphalt?

Usually a few days for cars, longer in summer heat. We give you timing for your job.

Should I seal a long driveway every year?

No. Seal when the surface turns gray or stops shedding water, typically every few years.
