Fixing Potholes Where They Start
Pothole and asphalt repair is about stopping water. A crack lets rain into the base, the clay under it swells and softens, and traffic pushes the weakened asphalt down until it breaks out. Shoveling cold patch into the hole fills it for a few weeks. A lasting repair cuts out the failed section, removes the wet material under it, rebuilds the base and seals the joint so water does not get back in.
Repair methods we use
- Saw-cut full-depth patch: the area is cut square, dug out, rebuilt with compacted stone and hot-mix, and sealed at the joints. HomeGuide prices this at $4 to $12 per square foot.
- Hot patch: hot-mix placed in a cleaned, tacked hole on a sound base, $2 to $5 per square foot.
- Infrared repair: the surface is heated and reworked with fresh mix, $2 to $6 per square foot; good for surface defects.
- Cold patch: a temporary fill for emergencies only.
We choose the method after probing the area.
Edges and aprons
Driveway edges in Mesquite break off because the clay beside them shrinks away in dry weather and gets soaked in wet weather. We rebuild the base under a failed edge, repave it with a tapered edge, and look for the water source. The apron at the street takes the heaviest turning load on a driveway; HomeGuide prices apron repair at $2 to $5 per square foot.
Crack sealing
Blackland Prairie clay opens deep cracks in dry weather, and pavement above it follows. Sealing cracks while they are still narrow keeps water out. HomeGuide says crack filling lasts about 1 to 2 years and crack sealing with hot rubberized material lasts 3 to 8 years. We clean cracks with compressed air and seal working cracks hot. Alligator-cracked areas are cut out and patched instead, because the base under them has already failed.
Utility cuts and trenches
Trenches for water, sewer or gas lines often settle if the backfill was not compacted. We cut out the sunken patch, compact the trench, and pave it flush.
When repairs stop making sense
If patches cover a large part of the surface or new potholes keep appearing, a round of repairs may cost nearly as much as resurfacing. We give you both prices.
Repair programs for property managers
For lots with many failures, we map and number each repair, rank them by risk and cost, and schedule them over one or more visits so the budget goes to the worst areas first.

Pothole & Asphalt Repair Questions
Why do my potholes keep coming back?
Because the base under them is still wet and soft. A saw-cut repair removes that material and rebuilds the base, which is what stops the cycle.
How much is pothole repair?
HomeGuide's national range is $100 to $400 for a typical pothole, and many contractors charge a minimum of $100 to $250. Doing several repairs in one visit lowers the cost of each.
When should cracks be sealed?
As soon as they appear and while they are still narrow, ideally in mild, dry weather. Sealing before a wet season keeps water out of the clay.
Can you fix my driveway apron?
Yes. If the work stays on your side of the curb, we rebuild and repave it. If it involves the curb cut, we check the city permit first.
